What Others Think Of Us

Some of our stake holders have given us testimonials about their experiences with ASC.

"Beginning

I was ....

  • Lost and confused
  • No confidence
  • No self esteem
  • Didn't know how to deal with my triggers
  • Smoking far too much
  • Thought no one understood
  • Never had the motivation to get out there and do the things I enjoy
  • Always worrying about what other people thought of me

Now (end)

  • I've got my confidence back
  • My self esteem as grown
  • I know how to deal with my moods / triggers
  • I smoke less and feel good about it
  • Realised I'm not the only person in the same situation
  • I now have motiivation - I'm now back at my dancing and joining the gym
  • I'm a totally different person than before

I wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for this group and the great people in it. Thank you all so much!!!"

"About one year ago my life was getting out of control and I could only see my life going one way and that was to an early grave due to a chaotic lifestyle and drug habit.

Then in October my mother passed away quite suddenly and the day before she passed away I promised her I would stop taking drugs and sort my life out, but as time passed I was really struggling to cope with everything and I wasn't talking about how I was feeling.

In February I was called into the Jobcentre and my New Deal Advisor told me that if I didn't attend a placement at Go Forth I would lose my benefit money and that was all I was told about Go Forth, but since I've realised that I really needed to come to a place like this, I'm able to open up about my mum and I'm learning how to deal with all these emotions I didn't know I had. I am slowly getting my confidence back; I also got a certificate for Mental Health first aid and I am moving towards getting a job which is something I never thought I would do a year ago.

"I", "N" and the rest of the team have been a big help to me. I've enjoyed the group so much that I've signed up for the next course which I'm really looking forward to.

My life is slowly but surely getting back on track and I'm chuffed about that. So thanks to everyone at Go Forth."

"After coming to ASC I have noticed a marked improvement in my way of thinking. My mental attitude towards my drinking has changed a lot in a very short space of time.

When I first came here I was apprehensive and didn’t really know what to expect. I found the staff very friendly and have made some good friends within the group and would really like to stay in touch with them after the course is finished. The staff have been very friendly and supportive and really can’t be faulted in any way.

The main thing I’m taking away from this course is a better mental attitude towards me and others and a much clearer and more positive way of thinking."

"Attending Go Forth has helped me in many ways, when I first came here I was a bit shy and apprehensive, I was worrying about what people would think of me and judge me but I soon found out that everyone was in the same boat, which helped me come out of my shell better. I think because I was the only drug addict there and everyone else was alcohol addicted I felt they wouldn't understand me the same but that's not the case as every addiction involves the same thing in life ie how to get clean and also face our demons.

I never thought I would get my confidence back but this group has helped me to overcome that and also to have more self worth. Because I had taken drugs for so long I had forgotten how to deal with everyday things in life. I never thought for a minute that it would happen, but slowly and surely I have and it feels great. I could not have asked for a better group of people to have befriended as I think they were all feeling the same as me. I am now greatly looking forward to the 14 week plan as I know I am ready now to move on.

Just a special thanks to "I" and "S" for all the great support that you have gave me through the 8 week course as I don't know what I would have done without your support. So once again, thanks a million."

"During my time at Go Forth I feel I have taken a big step in the right direction as my life was all over the place and I had no structure in my life. The first day I started it was heavy, I didn't know anyone.I mostly sat in silence and listened more than being involved in the topics. As I progressed through the weeks I started getting confident and opened up more to the others as I got to know them.

I feel safe and comfortable while I attend, as the clients understand and know what it's like to be in our kind of situation. The most praise I would like to give is to "N", "S" and "I", they are really sound and supportive and will help you as much as possible with any of your circumstances, personal included. They have been excellent with me, it's been a great support for me and where I am in life now.

Among the things I've done at Go Forth involved Adult Literacy, Health Issues in the Community, Group Work which will be certified at the completion of the course and also computer skills which I recently received a certificate on this subject. The subjects are quite interesting and can also be enjoyable as well.

I've come a long way since I've attended Go Forth. Now it's near the end of my course "N" has found me a steady work place which I am very chuffed about so I will get to complete my placement in Go Forth then will be going into employment shortly after the program ends.

Thanks to all at Go Forth."

"During my time at Go Forth. The plunge was nervous at first. Then I got the courage to go on and as I went through the doors I was welcomed with open arms by our lovely "I". "I" was really great then I met "S" and "N" and that is how it all started. I was nervous but Go Forth made me feel good about myself and helped me to see things from a different perspective, as I feel I always seen things differently but I feel my eyes are open now.

I am hoping to start College soon and have a date for an interview. I am also trying to get a voluntary placement until then with Cancer Research in a charity shop or with the British Red Cross. I like the idea that I could make a difference to others even if it' is a small one.

If I hadn't given Go Forth a go I think I would still be sitting doing nothing, twiddling my thumbs. I feel the support I have had from "N", "S", "I" and "C" (who has not long started) plus "J" (from "CE") has played a big role helping all of us. I am grateful for this experience and for the time and support I have been given at Go Forth.

Thank you very much."

"Firstly I would like to begin with thanking all the Staff & Service Users for the way I feel Mentally, Physically and Spiritually and to be able to have peace and contentment in my life again, happiness and a better understanding and willingness to accept and admit my faults and to move on and succeed in many positive areas in my life.

I suffered many years of torment through self afflicted addictive behaviour through Alcohol which brought me to the lowest part in my life.

I heard of Go Forth and thought why not?, I had tried many other areas off Alcohol treatment i.e. A.A. N.H.S. Occupational, Medical, Psychological therapies and Medications but truly I found no way out, Maybe it was I truly didn’t admit or want my life to really change the way I lived and expected someone to do something to help? No firstly there was a problem I found extremely hard to stop or control! Secondly Alcohol controlled me! Thirdly I had to admit to myself the problem and seek help and want to change.

I have been attending Go-Forth Introduction and now Step to Change, and can honestly say I have learned more about myself and others in similar or even different areas of addiction and behaviour and felt really able to open up and talk to my key workers and group leaders and everyone including other service users.

This course has prompted me to think about my positive attributes towards myself and society and life itself, And also to use the negative things in my life to move and go on Firstly in my own life and then help and listen to others. This has been a process I didn’t imagine would bring so much good and positive feelings in me and others and I would and will promote this as a very Good, Educating Self-Aware, Fun and Safe Environment for anyone in similar different or needing circumstances.

If we do not try how will we ever know the outcome? 1st work on one self, admit and seek."

"Go Forth has given me a lot more confidence and I feel I can be more open. I am finding it easier to talk and get on with others. When we visited Celtic Park, for the presentations of our Health Issues in the Community Certificates I felt very important. A few months ago I would never have believed I would be where I am now.

I am starting a College course (Intermediate 1 Access to Computing) in August which I wouldn't have thought about if I hadn't attended Go Forth.

I feel Go Forth is a very good place to go as it made me feel better about myself. I didn't feel as if I was being judged and I learned about a lot of qualities I have that I didn't realise before. I also learned new skills about art, computing, health issues and adult literacy which were all very interesting.

Most of all it gave me time to get out of the house and go somewhere I felt I was liked. It gave me a routine and I learned about the person I am and the future I want to have.

My experience of the staff "S", "N", "I" and "C" is that they are very nice people as they made me feel important which I feel boosted my confidence.

Go Forth has been brilliant for me because if it wasn't for this experience I feel I wouldn't be where I am today."

"I am now someone who’s trying to be a better person, saying ‘NO’ to people, trying to stop smoking, reduce Methadone, take responsibility for my daughter – be a better Dad. I am trying to help people as much as I can. I’ve said “sorry” to everyone I’ve been bad to in the past and this has helped me to build up trust."

Service User - IC

"I am trying to better myself, make things better for those around and close to me.  I want to further myself (education).  I want to reduce Methadone – be self reliant, without having to rely on any medication; try and make up for mistakes I’ve done in the past by doing what I need to do – to make up for it.   I want to be involved more in my wee boy’s life and to build more life experience; travel, different cultures and life experience in general. "I came to Go Forth one day in February 2009, I had heard about what they did here and I was looking to fill my time somehow. I decided I would go along and volunteer my services, arranged an interview, went in and I left an hour later having signed up to their 14 week step to change group.  I was interviewed by I & A, little did I know then what an influence I was going to have on my life.  Go Forth gave me structure and a purpose in my life again. I, N and the rest of the team at Go Forth couldn’t have been more helpful and so friendly.  I wish I had known about the service they provide a couple of years ago. I have tried other services but none of them have had such an impact on my life.  Times we didn’t do nothing but talk, I really loved going there.

Now I am a full time student at Forth Valley College on their access to degree course.  Go Forth prepared me well with their expert help and guidance.  I used to be a quiet reserved type person but not so much now.  How things chance in the space of a year, I have gone from a recovering addict to full time student – a class rep n all!!

So thank you to all the staff at Go Forth.  I’m glad I came, well done Go Forth.."

Service User - TS

"I didn't really know what to expect when I came to Go Forth but I thought I might as well give it a try as I had nothing to lose and may even gain something, and honestly I'm glad I came. I'm not just saying it, it really is the best move I could have made, I know it sounds a bit corny but it's true.

When I first came I had low self esteem. I am not saying it is a hundred percent better just now, but is definitely a great deal better. I felt I had nothing to offer when I came to Go Forth. I felt I couldn't do anything and would be unable to achieve anything.

Go Forth has shown me different. It has shown me that I have more to offer than I believe and as long as I am wiling, I can achieve anything. So now I believe if I put enough work and effort into it I can achieve my goals. Go Forth has helped me to change these beliefs I had and now I believe in my own capabilities.

I am now planning to take up one of two college courses, either a Beauty Therapy or a Computing course. I feel I would not have made any of these steps if it was not for my experience at Go Forth. I think I would have been stuck in a rut for the foreseeable future."

"I have stopped drinking, I’m trying to get that job – I will get it sometime. I would like to get back on the road again; travelling in Europe, go back to Australia. I like helping people and I just want to be happy. I’m really quite content - I’m not a greedy person. I’ve got Gypsy blood in me!"

"I was first introduced to ASC after a three day stint in hospital recovering a seizure and battling with awful withdrawal symptoms from alcohol. Because I had dementia tremens (the DT's) I can't remember which doctor / medical practitioner recommended me to ASC, but to whoever that person was I will always be immensely grateful. To say that ASC changed my life around would be a gross understatement!

The first person I spoke to from ASC was "M", who I still see and will continue to do so after the course, as "M" as become an integral part of my life. Thereafter I was interviewed by "A" and began my first class with "G", who was so cheerful, positive, amazingly astute and SO funny, as is "I" in my "Step 2 Change" programme, which I'm repeating as I started the first one late and missed weeks due to "lapses".

Initially I remembered, and still do, not as "addiction support and control" but as in ASK. Everything I asked for was given to me - help, advice, thought provocation, genuine concern / empathy from both staff and users. At first ASC was my "safety net" and now, a year later it has made my goals / dreams realistic, not "play play". My procrastination is becoming a thing of the past and I can now fill my diary with the things I am doing instead of plans and lists and I can now put my previous study and experience onto good use by doing voluntary work with children.

"N" has helped me perhaps more than he realises with his gift of way of speaking in a simple, grassroots manor (even his metaphors). It's easy to edit my diary but not my thoughts, emotions etc

When I finally finish my journey with ASC and begin another I shall miss "I" and everyone else here, but will never forget them and how my life has been changed in such a positive way! I'll keep in touch and will still see "M" for a while.

Thank you ASC"

"I was initially hesitant to add group work to sole one-to-one counselling, due to my reluctance to meet new, or indeed any people.

However, in summary, the benefit I have received through attending this ASC programme is best summarised as follows:

  • An understanding of my need to drink, my fears of people, and my inability to deal with situations.
  • Increased social skills. Actually enjoying meeting and conversing with people.
  • Increased confidence in dealing with people, problems and life in general.
  • A sense of order in my life due to the timing of the sessions. The weekend felt less depressing as it feels like a weekend. That is, the week feels more like the working week I was accustomed to before I was signed as unfit for work.

Both staff and the group were instrumental in guiding me to feel better in myself, I have not felt any higher self esteem in years."

"I was very apprehensive at going to the project for my initial interview to see if I was eligible for this project. I was made to feel very welcome and put at ease, as this was a big step towards sobriety. I was welcomed within the group. The people there were in the same predicament as myself. Some were users (drug users) and some were drinkers. They would share their experiences and I could share my own. We could understand each other and I felt I could learn from them what they used to feign from relapsing.

I was referred to Go Forth from FD. I was very glad that my key worker was "S" from FD as I thought I would have to open up again to someone else which would have been scary for me. I have settled well into this programme.

I have met "D" who runs the Service User Group on a Wednesday which I participate in and I have also met the women from the women's group which is held every second Friday. My alcohol counsellor is "A" who I know very well and is a great help to me. "F" is another counsellor who I had the chance of getting to know and we get on well too. "N" is the project co-ordinator who has an abundance of knowledge. I also have contact with various agencies through Go Forth and I can access these any time that I feel the need. These agencies are a great help to me. Sadly I will be leaving Go Forth in a short time, but it has been a great help for me. I would recommend this project to others but sadly I feel there is a lack of information for the general public about services available to people like me or their relatives. This information should be more widely available within GP surgeries, community centres and other public areas."

"I would like to thank everyone at Go Forth as because of attending I have became a more confident person and have realised that I can achieve more out of my life than I ever thought was possible I have now realised that I can achieve my goals that a have set for myself and my family as before a started coming a had lost all direction in my life and had started to give up but because of all the support that a have been given I am starting to look forward again and it makes me feel great that I am going forward  rather than round in circles also by attending the course I have meet a lot of lovely people that have made big difference to my life by the support that I have been given I have also started to become more lively person again and my confidences is growing all the time the support that I was given has been out of this world.

It has been a life saver and has helped me with a lot of different issues that I would really have struggled with if the course had not been there for me. I am so sad that it has came to a end but so glad that a have had the chance to have been here and had such a great time and have had so much great support from everyone on the course as well."

"I would like to thank Go Forth for helping me overcome my drinking problem. Before I came I was in prison due to problems caused by my drinking. When I come to Go Forth I feel happy, I enjoy being with the group, we support each other and I find it easy to bring up my problems so we can discuss the way forward for me. I enjoy the activity days, the last one was at the Falkirk Wheel, and lunch at the Roxy Cafe.

Go Forth has helped me get back on my feet and I now feel my life is not so bad. I have an interview at Forth Valley College in May to attend the Professional Food Preparation Course which will give me an NQ. Go Forth has given me the motivation to move on with my life. I miss "B", she was a lot of fun."

"I've really had my ups and downs throughout my time with the group but Go Forth / ASC have never shut the door on me as others have done before them. I'm now getting stronger, mentally and physically day to day and week to week so the world is my oyster.

I'm looking forward to the college course, starting in August and would like to thank everyone that's contributed to any recovery and would recommend anybody to the programme so Go Forth and join up, it will help you."

"My name is "W".

This is a short story to tell you about Go Forth.

I was stuck in a rut, the same thing day in day out and then I was referred to Go Forth. So I thought why not give it a try. I was a little apprehensive about coming to Go Forth but when I got there the staff were great, very understanding and very responsive.

We learned a lot about computers and about ourselves. I won't go on for long but if there is anyone in the same situation as I was, it is well worth  your while and time coming to Go Forth. It has put me in a better frame of mind and I seem to know what direction to go now.

Thanks to all the staff at Go Forth."

"My time at ASC has been quite uplifting and informative. It has made me think more about other people not just about myself all the time.

Before I came to ASC I had a real feeling of worthlessness and my confidence was nearly zero but the group has made my spirits high again and made me do things again like going into town, shops etc. I also can listen to other people's problems without judging anybody and helping them out. I am looking to enhance different parts of my life now other than looking back the way. I am starting more and more to look forward and look to brighter times. I realise that I shall have bad days and good days but I am trying to look at things more realistically other than looking for the bad points all the time, I can look for the good points as well.

The subjects are sometimes intense but can be humorous as well because I feel that people need to have humour to lighten up subjects. I like everyone at the group and that really helps easing my anxiety.

I think that "I" is really caring, very helpful; considerate because of this it makes things easier. "I" is just absolutely fantastic all-round.

PURE DEAD BRILLIANT!"

"Since having completed my course at ASC - Go Forth myself and C are now enrolled on level 6 Social Sciences at Forth Valley college starting full time in Sept 2010, we still have another interview to attend but at our last interview we were told that we are over qualified for level 5 and that we were more suited for level 6 which is fantastic because it puts us a year closer to becoming addiction counsellors.

None of this would have been possible without firstly Forth Valley college for running the course at Go Forth. Please could you pass my thanks to everybody at ASC - Go Forth for everything, there patience, understanding and most of all, helping my future."

"Thank you for all the help and support you've given me this year (and last). By the time I get back from my trip to London, I have a wonderful job to await me thanks to ASC (special thanks to DF from CVS who I've phoned to thank). Great opportunity for me. Exactly what I need. Will always keep in touch."

"When I started at Go Forth I felt like a fish out of water. I had been living on my own for 6 years and now I was being put into a room full of total strangers, which was freaking me out. However, with the support of my key worker, "S", and others at Go Forth they managed to allay any fears that I might have had and I made the decision to carry on with the project the best as I could.

At first I found it very difficult to fit in, I would rather listen to what everyone else had to say than take part in any discussion myself. Now though, I have become more confident and assertive. I enjoy taking part in discussions and am not afraid of voicing my opinion now.

While I have been here I have gained more experience of working on the computer, and how to use a photo editing package on the  computer. I have also gained the HIC Certificate in Health Issues in the Community. I will also be getting certificates in computing and adult literacy.

I cannot thank the staff of Go Forth enough for the help, support and understanding throughout the last 16 weeks. I know that I certainly would not be where I am now if I had not taken this opportunity. I would most likely be at home doing nothing and staring at the blank walls.

Thank you all, very much, again."
